(Medical-NewsWire.com, December 26, 2014 ) North Adelaide, SA -- A new study from the University of Tasmania shows a relationship between breast cancer surgery patients and improved physical and mental conditions. Aside from reducing stress, yoga has been shown to reduce the prevalence of a serious and painful condition that often occurs after breast cancer surgery and treatment, called secondary arm lymphoedema.
"Secondary arm lymphoedema continues to affect at least 20% of women after treatment for breast cancer requiring lifelong professional treatment and self-management." says study co-author Annette Loudon.
This condition may be a result of radiotherapy directed at the lymph nodes, causing scar tissue and fibrosis formation, or breast cancer surgery, damaging the area, both leading to swelling in the affected arm. Secondary arm lymphoedema can cause swelling and pain into the effected arm, a heaviness in the arm, tightness and heaviness across the chest, reduced or altered limb sensation, produce early fatigue and significantly reduce the quality of life of a sufferer.
In an eight week study that included 40 participants, patients with this post-treatment condition reported reduced mental and physical symptoms. The yoga program was shown to help with lymphatic drainage, range of motion, and anxiety levels. The yoga therapist at the center of the study, Loudon, is now training therapists to offer her yoga program for lymphedema sufferers.
The Yoga Towel Experts spokesperson Jessica Lauren commented about the findings, "The true benefits of yoga are still being discovered, and this study is just another great example of how yoga’s powerful effects can truly help people around the world."
