(Medical-NewsWire.com, November 27, 2014 ) Chicago, Illinois -- Obesity is a major health problem in the United States and various surveys have revealed that over 50% of the population wants to lose weight. With the New Year fast approaching, losing weight will be on many New Year Resolution lists.
"Research has shown that probiotic supplements may help the weight loss process,' MightySupp CEO Aaron Parker said, ‘provided the person taking them is following a sensible and nutritious weight loss plan.'
In a study published in the British Journal of Nutrition and carried out at Laval University in Quebec, 125 overweight men and women were instructed to follow a 12 week weight loss plan, followed by a 12 week maintenance plan. Half of the participants took probiotics and half took placebos. Although the probiotics had no significant effect on the men, there was a considerable difference in the women. The women who took probiotics lost an average of 9.7 pounds while those taking the placebos only lost an average of 5.7 pounds.
After the 12 week maintenance period the placebo group maintained a stable weight, but the probiotics group continued to lose weight - 1.8 more pounds, on average. The study authors believe that probiotics make your intestinal walls less permeable, therefore hindering molecules that may contribute to obesity, diabetes and glucose intolerance from entering the bloodstream. The researchers also suggested eating more foods that contain probiotics such as yoghurt, as well as taking supplements. Another study from the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that male subjects who took the probiotic supplement Lactobacillus gasseri for 12 weeks decreased their belly fat by 4.6 percent. They lost an average of 5.8 square cm of visceral fat and 7.4 square cm of subcutaneous fat as well, whereas a control group gained 1.4 square cm of belly fat. This result is particularly noteworthy, as belly fat on men denotes a higher risk of heart attacks, diabetes and gastrointestinal problems.
There are many different strains of natural probiotics that reside in the gut, and each person has a unique combination, based on their diet, health, environment and genetics. Researchers have found that thin people have very different gut bacteria to those who are overweight, and one study found that overweight people have 20% more of the ‘bad' bacteria and 90% less of the "good" bacteria, when compared to their slim counterparts. ‘Losing weight usually means a significant change in diet, and that in itself will help promote more good bacteria in the gut,' Mr Parker said. ‘Taking probiotic supplements will also boost your levels of good bacteria and will help your digestive processes to become more efficient, which in turn will aid weight loss.'
