Research Highlights Improvements In Mental Health With Probiotics

Probiotic Supplements Reviews For MightySupp

(Medical-NewsWire.com, November 26, 2014 ) Chicago, Illinois -- About one in four US adults, which is approximately 79 million, suffer from some form of mental illness in any given year.

Mental illness can range from common disorders such as depression and anxiety to more serious conditions such as schizophrenia, biploar disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).

Increased awareness of mental health has resulted in more research being done in this area; in particular, the possibility of biological causes of some conditions. Research has shown that the intestinal tract, and specifically the probiotics that reside there to help digestion and strengthen immunity, may play a more significant role in mental health than the mind.

The mind-gut connection has been acknowledged by medical science for many years and recently a new enteric neuroscience has emerged. The enteric nervous system is the collection of nerves in the gut and is referred to as the second brain because of its similarity to the brain in size and complexity. It's been established that there is direct communication between the gut and the brain via the vagus nerve, and scientists suggest that the microbes in the gut communicate with the brain by altering the immune system or producing their own neurotransmitters.

‘We've all experienced how emotions can have a direct impact on our gut,' MightySupp CEO Aaron Parker said. ‘Butterflies in our stomach when we're nervous, diarrhea when we're anxious, and lack of appetite when we're sad or under stress. And research has shown that we may be able to alter our mental health by changing the composition of our gut and one way we can do that is by taking probiotic supplements.'

In a study published by the National Center for Biotechnology Information, participants experienced substantially reduced symptoms of anxiety, depression and hostility after one month of probiotic supplements. Another study showed that subjects who took probiotics for 30 days reported much lower stress levels than those who took a placebo, which was borne out by their reduced cortisol levels.

Dr Emeran Mayer, a professor of medicine and psychiatry at the University of California, has been examining the brains of volunteers by way of MRI images to see what bearing gut microorganisms have on their brains. In one study of 60 subjects, he found that connections between different regions of the brain varied according to which type of bacteria was most abundant in the gut.

In another study, where several types of probiotics were given twice a day to a group of healthy women aged 18 to 55, their anxiety levels were reduced compared to women given a placebo or no treatment.

‘Research in the area of probiotics and mental health is still in its infancy,' Mr Parker said. ‘But there are promising indications that taking probiotic supplements can help to improve certain mental health conditions.'
