Studies Suggest Turmeric Supplements A Safe Alternative To NSAIDs

(Medical-NewsWire.com, November 21, 2014 ) Portland, Oregon -- Statistics from the American Nutrition Association estimate that at least 16,500 people die each year due to side effects associated with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). They're the drug of choice for treating arthritis pain, but an increasing number of studies are showing that a turmeric supplement may offer a safer alternative to the prescription medications.

"NSAIDs can be obtained by prescription, but they're also available as over-the-counter remedies and many people don't even know they're taking an NSAID," said VitaBreeze spokesperson, Michelle O'Sullivan.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued warnings about long-term use of NSAIDs. They've been linked to bleeding, cardiovascular problems and kidney failure. The FDA indicated they have the potential to cause allergic reactions, ulcers and fluid retention, and can be especially dangerous for individuals with asthma.

Danish researchers found NSAIDs particularly hazardous for individuals who have experienced a heart attack. The risk of another heart attack was substantially increased, even when NSAIDs were used for a brief amount of time.

The toxic effects of NSAIDs often exhibit no warning signs. The American Journal of Medicine went on record as saying approximately 107,000 people were hospitalized each year for NSAID related complications. The New England Journal of Medicine echoed those sentiments, adding that it's a silent epidemic.

Research indicates that turmeric offers a safe alternative to NSAIDs. The botanical spice is well tolerated even with extended usage. NSAIDs work by inhibiting one specific enzyme that triggers pain and inflammation in response to bodily injury or damage. Turmeric affects the same enzyme, along with others involved in the pain response for a more thorough solution.

Turmeric is a natural anti-inflammatory and antioxidant, providing a two-fold approach to pain. It relieves inflammation that causes pain, swelling and stiffness. It also neutralizes free radicals that damage cells and interfere with the body's ability to heal itself.

Turmeric has earned the appellation as "generally recognized as safe" (GRAS) by the FDA and research has shown that turmeric is as effective as many commonly prescribed medications. Medical practitioners recommend a daily turmeric dose of 750mg to address pain issues.

Consumers who utilize a turmeric supplement should ensure that it includes a black pepper extract. Turmeric passes quickly through the digestive system and a black pepper extract is critical to enhance absorption (www.amazon.com/Turmeric-Curcumin-Complex-BioPerine-Bio-availability/dp/B00JA4TLTI).
