People Are Combining NSAIDs With Glucosamine Supplements For Better Arthritis Management

(Medical-NewsWire.com, October 15, 2014 ) Portland, Oregon -- The battle between NSAIDs and glucosamine supplements continues to rage with no clear winner. A two-part study conducted at Temple University in Pennsylvania showed an increasing number of people are choosing to combine the two in an effort to better manage their joint pain.

"Glucosamine is believed to be a natural anti-inflammatory and the research was conducted to determine if glucosamine really did meet claims of easing pain as an anti-inflammatory," said VitaBreeze spokesperson, Michelle O'Sullivan. "The results were surprising."

The Temple University study showed that glucosamine relieved pain, but results indicated it was due to glucosamine's ability to help repair damage rather than its anti-inflammatory properties. Glucosamine is a chemical produced naturally within the body to help build and maintain cartilage, the soft tissue that allows joints to move smoothly and pain free.

The second part of the study was performed to ascertain if a combination of NSAIDs and glucosamine worked better than singly. At the end of the study, it was concluded that using both provided greater relief, with one substance enhancing the other when combined in smaller doses.

The study provides arthritis patients with new information to consider. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued warnings about the potentially deadly consequences of prolonged use of NSAIDs. Like many pharmaceuticals, NSAIDs address pain symptoms but over time individuals need to increase the dosage to obtain the same results.

Glucosamine has traditionally been combined with chondroitin, another chemical the body makes naturally to maintain and build cartilage. As people age, the body produces less of both chemicals, leading to the breakdown of cartilage, inflammation and pain.

Numerous studies have determined that a dietary supplement that contains glucosamine and chondroitin is more effective than either one by itself. The combination provides people with a boost of elements the body doesn't produce in sufficient quantities and adverse effects are rare, even after extended usage.

To date, medical professionals don't recommend combining NSAIDs with a glucosamine supplement and many eschew the supplement completely, despite numerous studies that have proven the ability of glucosamine to fight inflammation and provide the body with essential elements for healthy joints. However, as long as people experience the pain of arthritis, they will continue to employ whatever means necessary to keep their joints healthy and pain free (http://www.amazon.com/VitaBreeze/pages/7603999011).
