Turmeric May Reduce Inflammatory Response Found In Psoriasis

(Medical-NewsWire.com, October 14, 2014 ) Portland, Oregon -- Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease affecting approximately 7.5 million people in the U.S. There's no cure for psoriasis and typical treatment consists of cortisone creams and limited exposure to sunlight. Research into the properties of turmeric has revealed that a turmeric supplement may help with symptoms due to the botanical's anti-inflammatory abilities.

"Psoriasis can also affect the joints and connective tissues," said VitaBreeze spokesperson, Michelle O'Sullivan. "The National Psoriasis Foundation has acknowledged that research indicates turmeric may be beneficial for minimizing symptoms and flare-ups associated with the disease."

Psoriasis is the most common autoimmune disease in the U.S. marked by thick patches of red or silvery colored itchy skin. It can appear at any age and adversely affects quality of life. Symptoms range from mild to severe and many individuals with psoriasis often develop psoriatic arthritis. In psoriasis, the normal life cycle of skin cells is altered, causing them to build up on the surface of the skin.

Results of research by The National Institute of Health, Washington DC showed that turmeric's antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects were beneficial in relieving symptoms of inflammation in psoriasis. Subjects in a preliminary study reported reduced symptoms after taking an oral dosage of curcumin, the active ingredient in turmeric.

Research results published in the journal of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists demonstrated that turmeric affected the signaling pathways of cells and reduced inflammation associated with psoriasis flare-ups. Test subjects demonstrated no ill effects after a three-month regimen of oral curcumin.

There's no cure for psoriasis, but scientific research is clear that turmeric has a therapeutic effect. Psoriasis is marked by an excess growth of skin cells that increases in severity along with the rate of bodily inflammation. Turmeric's ability as an antioxidant agent to neutralize free radicals and reduce inflammation has been amply demonstrated in numerous research studies.

Medical practitioners recommend a daily curcumin dosage of 750mg to obtain the maximum therapeutic results. The trigger for psoriasis can be a wound or infection, or something as innocuous as sunburn. Modern science has shown that turmeric, an old-world remedy, has multiple applications for today's ailments, holding potential and promise for people with psoriasis (www.amazon.com/Turmeric-Curcumin-Complex-BioPerine-Bio-availability/dp/B00JA4TLTI).
