New Study Supports Giving Vitamin D Supplementation From Birth

Benefits of Vitamin D

(Medical-NewsWire.com, October 01, 2014 ) Hollywood, Florida -- These days it seems like hardly a day goes by without vitamin D being mentioned in the news. Researchers all over the world are studying what is essentially a hormone, and many now believe that vitamin D deficiency acts as a catalyst for several major health concerns, including some cancers, and particularly breast cancer; colon cancer and prostate cancer. A number of very recent studies have also uncovered strong evidence to suggest that there's a direct link between vitamin D deficiency and the onset of dementia.

In one recent study which involved thousands of people, researchers found that those individuals with low vitamin D levels were twice as likely to suffer from illnesses like schizophrenia and Parkinson's disease, while another recent study showed that vitamin D can significantly reduce the risk of complications which frequently occur following surgery. However, researchers did also emphasize the fact that far more research needs to be done before vitamin D supplementation can become a standard part of treatment for people who are awaiting surgery.

While the human body is capable of producing its own vitamin D when skin is exposed to direct sunlight, most people are still thought to be vitamin D deficient. In most northern countries there simply isn't enough yearly sunshine to facilitate adequate vitamin D production, while in very sunny countries, the vast majority of people try to protect themselves from direct sunlight due to skin cancer concerns. These people either cover themselves up, or they use sunscreen lotions, both of which can reduce natural vitamin D production by up to 95%. With an ever increasing amount of research showing the importance of vitamin D, most people now rely on fortified foods or vitamin D supplements.

Some researchers are now saying that vitamin D supplementation should begin at birth, particularly when it comes to breast fed infants. In a recent study conducted by a team of researchers from the University of Iowa, 213 breast feeding mothers were split into four groups, with each group receiving different doses of vitamin D. What the researchers found was that even the children of mothers on an 800 IU daily dose were shown to have vitamin D levels below the recommended 50 nmol/l. Additionally, they found that vitamin D levels dropped considerably from the time of birth to the age of one month. Following the results of this study, the researchers involved published their findings, and now recommend a daily dose of 400 IU for all breast fed babies, starting from the age of one month old.

Countless researchers and doctors have been calling for an overhaul of current vitamin D recommendations, arguing that current guidelines are outdated. Consumers too have started paying closer attention, and have subsequently started taking more potent supplements, with vitamin D3 5000 IU supplements proving to be among the most popular. Nutra Mina, a Hollywood based vitamin D supplier, has also seen a steady growth in demand for 5000 IU vitamin D supplements, while demand for less potent supplements has diminished considerably. "Since we initially launched our enhanced vitamin D3 5000 IU range, we have seen a dramatic increase in demand," said Mr. Oliver Adams, a spokesman for Nutra Mina. "We believe that consumers are beginning to lose faith in official guidelines which have remained stagnant for decades, despite modern research, and despite the fact that we lead a very different sort of lifestyle these days," he said during a recent interview.

As with all dietary supplements, people are still advised to consult with their healthcare professional before they start taking a vitamin D supplement. Medical experts also warn that because the supplement industry is largely unregulated, it is vital that if people choose to take a daily supplement, they should only use supplements from a reputable supplier.
