Doctors Called On To Optimize Vitamin D Levels Prior To Surgery

What is Vitamin D

(Medical-NewsWire.com, September 30, 2014 ) Hollywood, Florida -- Recent years have seen a flurry of renewed interest in vitamin D, with many researchers now claiming that vitamin D deficiency is a major contributor of many serious illnesses. Vitamin D, a hormone produced by the body when skin is exposed to direct sunlight, has already also been linked to dementia. Some studies have shown that prolonged vitamin D deficiencies can more than double the risk of dementia among the elderly.

Many researchers acknowledge the fact that vitamin D deficiency has been around for countless decades already, but they argue that the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency has spiked since the advent of sunscreen lotions. "Every day people are being told to stay out of the sun, or they are told to use a good quality sunscreen lotion because being in the sun causes skin cancer," said Mr. Oliver Adams, a spokesman for Nutra Mina. "The reality of the matter is that if you do avoid the sun, or you do always use a sunscreen lotion, then you simply won't be able to get sufficient vitamin D unless you are taking vitamin D supplements," said Mr. Adams, speaking over the phone from his Hollywood office.

Just recently, a number of prominent physicians have urged doctors to pay closer attention to vitamin D blood serum levels of patients who are scheduled to undergo surgery. They believe that there is already sufficient evidence to show that people with vitamin D deficiency are more at risk of suffering from complications following surgical procedures. "We believe there is more than enough evidence out there already, and we would like to see a proper randomized trial get underway," said Dr. Jeffrey Roizen from the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

Dr. Jeffrey Roizen, the coauthor of a somewhat provocative editorial that was recently published in Anesthesia and Analgesia, says that it is time for researchers to forget about doing any further observational studies."There have countless such studies done already, and they all point in the same direction. It is time for researchers to do some real research, and that means they need to get started with a universally accepted randomized trial," he said.

Dr. Roizen has also recently said that people need to take matters into their own hands, rather than wait for the results of a randomized trial. "Whether you are requiring surgery or not, everyone should get tested in order to determine what their vitamin D blood serum levels are. If they are below 50 ng/ml, then I recommend taking a good quality vitamin vitamin D supplements," said Dr. Roizen.

Like most doctors, Dr. Roizen was not willing to recommend spending more time in the sun. Because excessive sun exposures is widely believed to be the biggest cause of skin cancer, most doctors are wary of offering advice concerning how much time people should spend in the sun. Most feel that vitamin D supplementation is a much safer alternative.

Unlike other vitamins, vitamin D is not found in many foods, and in those foods that do have it, it is only found in very small concentrations. This makes it impossible to optimize vitamin D levels through diet alone.
