(Medical-NewsWire.com, September 26, 2014 ) Beaverton, OR -- A recent study done on customer satisfaction related to Ear Thermometry showed that there are basically 2 groups that are on the opposite side of the satisfaction curve. One group is satisfied and one group is dissatisfied. There is only a small group in the middle that is more or less neutral about the trustworthiness of ear thermometry.
iProven, the company that did this case study among its peers and on social media on this occasion during the orientation phase of developing its first product, the Ear Thermometer ET-116A, found out what caused the groups to be devided. The results were that 79% of the people were satisfied, 2% was neutral and 19% was dissatisfied. On investigating the reasons for dissatisfaction, the results were interesting and iProven choose to take action.
The main reason of dissatisfaction had to do with the getting of inconsistent readings. The other reasons were almost irrelevant based on the amount of votes. There were some quotes like "It is easier to use a rectal thermometer" to "My grandma used rectal, my mother used it, so I will prefer rectal over ear Thermometry" or "Too expensive". But the one that stood out the most was the fact that it gave inconsistent readings.
iProven looked deeper for the cause of this inconsistency and found out that there were exactly the same devices used in both the satisfied and the dissatisfied groups. iProven asked pediatricians and doctors as well, which used these Ear Thermometers professionally. Together with their feedback it became clear that the dissatisfaction about inconsistent readings have to do with several factors. First of all there is the quality of the product. "Cheap products are usually of cheap quality as well. For 15$ it is impossible to get a decent device." Was the feedback of one of the doctors iProven talked to.
But that did not make sense on the good quality devices that were appearing in both groups. Because even if the quality was top notch, there were inconsistent readings.
During the in depth investigation, 3 main reasons came out of getting inconsistent readings.
Reason #1: Ear Thermometry can be done wrong easily. Correct use requires some practice. Because the eardrum has to be seen by the infrared lens, pointing at the wrong spot in the ear canal will result in inconsistent readings. In that case the temperature of the ear canal is measured and not the eardrum itself. When on a second measurement the eardrum itself is measured, the two measurements show some difference that lead to the inconsistency. The solution is measuring the correct way and treating ear thermometry with care.
Reason #2: Incorrect measurement due to an unclean ear canal or unclean probe lens. There are people that produce more earwax over others. This will make it hard for the infrared light to reach the eardrum, which will lead to inconsistency. The solution is to check if the ear canal is clean. The probe lens itself has to be cleaned right before every use.
Reason #3: The device used is of low quality. Especially for home use there are many different brands that sell Ear Thermometers. Decent products have decent pricing. "You get what you pay for" is a rule of thumb that applies to this product very well.
The outcome shows that ear thermometry by itself is very reliable. The way it is used, as well as the circumstances, can influence the result. The doctors advice: Measure multiple times in both ears. If there are different results, the highest read is usually spot on.
