Health Experts Warn That People Should Get Tested For Vitamin D Deficiency

Vitamin D Test -- Understanding What Low Vitamin D Levels Mean

(Medical-NewsWire.com, September 16, 2014 ) Hollywood, Florida -- In the world of vitamins and general well-being, vitamin D has long since been regarded as the champion of champions. However, despite the immense popularity of vitamin D, many health experts believe that the overwhelming majority of people still fail to appreciate the important role this vitamin plays in terms of health. Several prominent figures have in the past suggested that this lack of appreciation could stem from the fact that people are misled by the name.

Contrary to what many people believe, vitamin D is not a vitamin at all. It is a hormone which is typically produced by the body in response to direct sunlight. Unlike other vitamins, vitamin D is not readily available in food. There are only a handful of foods that contain this important vitamin, and they only contain very small amounts. Additionally, that which is present in some foods is generally known as vitamin D2, whereas the human body produces vitamin D3 when skin is exposed to sunlight. Vitamin D3 is considered to be far more potent than vitamin D2.

Many studies have proven that practically all cells in the body have vitamin D receptors. Research has also shown that vitamin D plays a crucial role in controlling cell growth and cell death: it can instruct cells to grow and multiply, and it can instruct cells to self-destruct. A number of studies have also found that vitamin D is required in order for T-cells to become activated. These are the cells which the body uses in order to fight diseases; infections, and etc.

Experts in the field are now recommending that people should have their vitamin D levels checked, regardless of how much time they spend in the sun. "It is far more common than what you might think, to find severe cases of vitamin D deficiency among people living in sunny California", said a spokesman for Nutra Mina during a recent interview.

Speaking from the company's office in Hollywood, Mr. Adams warned that all people are at risk, regardless of where about in the world they live. "Naturally, people living in the northern hemisphere are more at risk because they tend to enjoy far less sunshine than people living in the southern hemisphere. However, how many people do you know who spend endless time in the sun without any form of protection? Don't forget, even a cheap sunscreen lotion can reduce vitamin D production by up to 95%" warned Mr. Adams.

When questioned about daily vitamin D requirements, Mr. Adams confessed that there is a great deal of confusion among those who take vitamin D3 supplements. "On one hand we have the government advocating a very low recommended daily allowance, while on the other hand we have highly respected scientists arguing that the recommended daily allowance should be increased significantly. "At Nutra Mina we recommend a daily intake of 5,000 IU, but the final decision rests with consumers," said Oliver Adams.

In recent years, several experts have also stepped forward to say that current guidelines are outdated, and that they only reflect the minimum amount of vitamin D needed to prevent Rickets in children. Researchers have also pointed out that different people have different vitamin D requirements due to a number of factors, including skin color; age; location and body weight. While people are being encouraged to bolster their vitamin D levels, they should always seek proper medical advice if in doubt.
