(Medical-NewsWire.com, September 01, 2014 ) Deerfield Beach, Florida -- A new study from the University of Arizona's Steele Children's Research Centre, published in the journal PLOS One, has discovered how curcumin, the active ingredient of the spice turmeric, can prevent colon cancer metastasis.
Metastasis is the name given to the spreading of cancer from one part of the body to others, and when this happens it greatly diminishes the chances of survival. Preventing metastasis is therefore an extremely important part of cancer treatment.
Turmeric expert Sue Benton from supplement company Earthstream Herbs commented on this development, saying "I'm delighted to see this new research on curcumin for preventing colon cancer metastasis. The researchers discovered that a certain part of a protein called cortactin is 'hyper-activated' in colon cancer, and this makes it easy for the cancer to metastasise – effectively making it more aggressive.
The researchers used curcumin to treat human colon cancer cells and discovered that it 'turns off' the cortactin protein, which prevents the cancer from metastasising. If cancer cells can be prevented from spreading in this way, it could make a significant difference to treatment outcomes.
The researchers commented that "Our findings have laid the foundation for future research to develop treatments using curcumin to prevent cancer's deadly spread to other organs."
