Falling Risk For Elderly Reduced Thanks To Handy Cane Elastic Foot

Reduce falling risks

(Medical-NewsWire.com, August 15, 2014 ) Portland, Oregon -- Gravity Mobility Aids is helping seniors stay active, yet safe, with an elastic foot on their Handy Cane, which stabilizes the cane's supporting capability. A Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) study found that over 47,000 Americans, ages 65 and over, are treated in hospitals yearly after falling while using walking aids. The stabilizing feature engineered into every Handy Cane’s foot gives seniors, who require extra walking assistance, the additional steadiness to stay active and live independently.

The Handy Cane elastic foot features four prongs, each outfitted with a bottom-facing small rubber pad. On each of these four rubber pads are horizontal gripping textures that add to the anti-slipping power of this walking aid device. Centered inside of the four rubber-padded prongs is an additional round rubber base, complete with concentric protruding grips that give the user of the Handy Cane double protection against slipping.

Providing a sturdy walking aid platform, which fails to slip, enhances the safe use of the Handy Cane. The aforementioned study found that 40 percent of falls by senior men or women who were using canes resulted in fractures and that 56 percent of these injuries happened while the users were at home. One in four falls from people who use a cane involved a hospital stay.

Not only does the Handy Cane's elastic foot give users needed stability, it allows for a more comfortable landing than the average cane. The first contact with the ground comes with one of the four prongs, prior to the full weight being put on the center rubber base. This provides the Handy Cane user with a shock absorbing characteristic, thereby lessening the ground's impact felt through the hand, wrist, arm and shoulder.
