(Medical-NewsWire.com, June 17, 2014 ) Glasgow, UK -- Coconut oil could be used to help reduce the symptoms of arthritis, according to a new study published in 2014. The study showed that the unique antioxidants that are contained within extra virgin coconut oil can help combat inflammation further reducing the daily torment of the condition.
The research was published in the International Immunopharmacol Journal and was carried out by researchers at University of St Thomas in Kuala Lumpur, India. The researchers stated that they carried out the study because of the lack of conventional medications that are currently available to arthritis sufferers and the serious side effects of currently prescribed medications.
In the study, the researchers removed the antioxidants from the virgin coconut oil and injected them into rats. The study concluded that coconut oil was just as effective at treating arthritis as conventional medications such as anti-inflammatories.
The research is good news for the millions of arthritis sufferers as there are a limited amount of drugs available to treat this painful condition, and the current medications available can cause side effects in some patients when taken long term.
While further research is required, it is hoped that one day the study might lead to new treatments for arthritis sufferers based on the antioxidants that have been extracted from the natural coconut oil.
This latest study confirms previous research that has shown that coconut oil can be beneficial to patients with arthritis and it is not just beneficial to people; the oil has been shown to treat arthritis in dogs and cats.
