(Medical-NewsWire.com, June 17, 2014 ) Glasgow, UK -- Research published today in the British Medical Journal shows that a third of people living in the England are on the cusp of developing type 2 diabetes. The study was carried out by the Universities of Florida and Leicester. This raises concerns among experts has the medical costs associated with diabetes are considered unsustainable.
However, according to a study from the Garvan Institute of Medical Research in Darlinghurst, Australia, extra virgin coconut oil could help prevent the development of this form of diabetes.
The study found that coconut oil was effective at improving insulin resistance, enabling the cells to better respond to insulin and utilise glucose for energy. It is believed that the positive effects of coconut oil are due to the medium chain fatty acids that it contains.
This is one of a number of studies that have shown supplementing the diet with medium chain fatty acids can help to improve glucose tolerance, and although the Australian study was carried out on rodents, the researchers say that it does have clinical relevance as it has also been shown that these types of fatty acids are beneficial to the way insulin works in humans.
Type 2 diabetes is often associated with obesity; the fatty acids contained within coconut oil can help to reduce fat accumulation, as well as enabling insulin to be used by the muscles and fatty tissues.
The researchers concluded that supplementing the diet with virgin coconut oil could play a part in helping to prevent obesity and the subsequent insulin resistance, thus helping to reduce the chances of an adult going on to develop type 2 diabetes.
