Does Coconut Oil Offer Potential As A Treatment For AlzheimerÂ’s Disease?

(Medical-NewsWire.com, June 12, 2014 ) Glasgow, UK -- Study after study has shown that coconut oil can help to successfully treat and prevent many diseases; however, there is now a study underway to see if coconut oil could be a potential treatment for one of the most devastating diseases of all.

Alzheimer's disease affects millions of people and their families every year. There is no cure for this disease and there is little in the way of effective treatments. However, a new study into the benefits of virgin coconut oil could pave the way for a new form of therapy for treating Alzheimer's disease.

Previous studies have indicated that extra virgin coconut oil could be used as a treatment for Alzheimer's disease, and this is a subject that has received a lot of media coverage in recent years. However, none of the studies have provided clinical data to show that extra virgin coconut oil could be an effective treatment, but the new study by Dr. Mary Newport might just change this.

It is hoped that the study results will be available in the next 12 months. It will be small scale study and it will involve 65 patients with mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease. Dr. Newport's husband was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease and the medications he was prescribed were not effective. Dr. Newport started to give her husband four teaspoons of coconut oil every day and she started to witness an improvement in her husband's condition.

The theory behind coconut oil as a treatment for Alzheimer's disease is that coconut oil can easily be turned into ketones; ketones can provides a valuable source of brain fuel. Some scientists argue that Alzheimer's disease occurs when the brain is starving, and finding an alternative means of brain fuel could be a potential treatment.

While the theory of using coconut oil for Alzheimer’s disease is largely untested, there are still considerable benefits to making coconut oil a part of the daily health and beauty regimen.
