Are e-cigarettes safe?

(Medical-NewsWire.com, March 07, 2014 ) Canada -- Cigarette smoking is dangerous to your health. This campaign has been going on for ages, stuck on cigarette packs as a warning. Smoking is the leading preventable cause of death in the United States, and is likely to trigger development of heart disease, stroke, and cancer.

Helbert Gilbert patented a “smokeless non-tobacco cigarette” in 1963. He detailed how it works by “replacing burning tobacco and paper with heated, moist, flavored air.” The device has no nicotine, and users enjoyed the flavored steam. Attempts to mass production did not push through. A Chinese pharmacist, Hon Lik, patented the first nicotine-based electronic cigarette in 2003. Lik created the modern day e-cigarette after his father, a chain smoker, died of lung cancer. He was the first person to manufacture and sell the product internationally.

E-cigarettes are more affordable than traditional cigarettes. Since then it has proliferated, and had attracted a lot of users. For one, people see it as a better way of smoking and as a means to eventually quit cigarette smoking. The devices are considered to be non pollutants since no smoke is produced into the environment. It does not have the odor of a real cigarette, which makes it environment-friendly. It is convenient to use, as it only requires some batteries or can be charged using a USB charger. The device is non flammable and poses no risk for passive smokers.

E-cigarette is not legal in all countries. It is a subject of constant debate among smoking and non-smoking activists worldwide. Health Canada prohibits selling of e-cigarettes which contains nicotine. It is also illegal in Canada to express health claims about the device, like suggesting it aids in quitting smoking, for example. On the other hand, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration intend to extend its regulatory control of tobacco to e-cigarettes in the future.

Earlier, the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention conveyed that there is an increase in the number of adolescent and adult users in the past years. Dr. Frank J. Chaloupka, a professor of economics who heads the Health Policy Center at the University of Illinois at Chicago mentioned, “this rapid rise has stimulated a vigorous debate in the tobacco control community over the potential public health impact of (e-cigarettes) and about how best to regulate them.” He further wrote, “while much remains to be learned about the public health benefits and/or consequences of (e-cigarettes) use, their exponential growth in recent years, including their rapid uptake among youths, makes it clear that policy makers need to act quickly.”
