Layering hand creams for anti-aging benefit
(Medical-NewsWire.com, February 16, 2014 ) New York, NY -- It has been said that a way to tell someone’s age is just by looking at the hands. If hands are not taken care of, chances are high that it will give away that number on the birthday cake that everyone tries to hide. This is due to the fact that skin on the back of the hand is much thinner than that on the face.

One recent study, published in Journal of Drugs in Dermatology (JDD) in 2013, reported that sun exposure causes premature aging of the skin. Often, the hands are the first part of the body that reveal visible signs of aging, as shown by the appearance of age spots, freckles, skin discolorations, increased skin dryness, and wrinkles, to mention some. Most concern about photodamage has been concentrated in treatment of the face, but it has expanded to include rejuvenation of the hands as well.

There are several treatment options available, such as medical fillers, laser skin resurfacing, and IPL treatments. However, hand aging can be best addressed through proper preventive measures and practices. One is through the use of anti-aging hand creams.

New studies on creams include the addition of growth factors, mostly obtained from plants. Dr. David Goldberg, director of Skin Laser & Surgery Specialists of New York and New Jersey, mentioned that these creams promote new collagen formation, not as effective as what a medical treatment can provide, but is something one can begin using every night at around age 40.

Another study published in JDD in 2007, reported that 83% of women between the ages of 35 and 65 who tried such creams found improvement in their hand wrinkles after just 60 days.

Daily use of simple moisturizer, which helps improve the appearance of hands, is an alternative to hand creams. While it does not reverse sun damage, it makes the skin look plumper and youthful. It works best when applied on slightly damp skin, and is best applied after a shower, bath or after washing the hands. Shea butter, olive oil, macadamia nut oil, vitamin E, and glycerin are common ingredients of these products.

It is vital to make sure that skincare is personalized: what works for one may not work on others. When choosing an anti-aging hand cream, it is best to go for budget-friendly options, as the only difference is the matter of time when it takes effect. Lastly, avoid chemicals as much as possible to avoid long-term damages and negative effects.
