New Study Shows 47 Percent of Mothers Have Not Been Warned Of Postnatal Problems Says Greg Monforton & Partners

(Medical-NewsWire.com, November 21, 2013 ) A new research study conducted by the Royal College of Midwives and NetMums.com has demonstrated that new mothers are not being properly warned in regards to the possibilities of having postnatal problems after giving birth. The study highlighted that such complications could be avoided by ensuring mothers are fully informed prior to giving birth.

The study demonstrated that nearly 47 percent of women are not being warned about the signs of danger of postnatal problems. If complications go undetected after following, these women’s lives may be at risk. These statistics were taken from a survey of midwives, while 31 percent of the women asked had admitted they were never, or rarely warned of the signs and symptoms of these life threatening conditions.

Cathy Warwick, Chief Executive of the Royal College of Midwives stated “These surveys confirm some of my fears about the level and quality of postnatal care that midwives are able to provide and that women are receiving. We know from a recent survey of heads of midwifery that postnatal care is suffering because of midwife shortages.” And added

"we need to get postnatal care right and we need to get it right quickly.”

Health care professionals advise that during the first couple days after giving birth, mothers should be alert of chest pain, shortness of breath, sickness, changes in vision, unpleasant vaginal discharge, abdominal pain, fever, increased heart rate, or extreme and sudden blood loss. It is highly recommended that any woman experiencing such conditions seek medical assistance immediately, as they could be experiencing postnatal problems.

In such an event, a mother may have fallen subject to medical malpractice and is advised to seek legal consultation from an experienced medical malpractice solicitor as soon as possible. Doing so may prevent this situation from ever occurring again, while helping other women to avoid such injuries.
