Studies Show Retinol Cream Fades Fine Lines Caused By Natural Aging

(Medical-NewsWire.com, November 11, 2013 ) Las Vegas, Nevada -- Report Conducted by the University of Michigan Shows Retinol Cream Fades Fine Lines Caused By Natural Aging

The University of Michigan Health System conducted a series of tests on the effects of retinol cream on the face. Since the time retinol cream was formulated in the 1970s, women used retinol to treat the effects of photoaging—aging caused by sun exposure. It was only recently that retinol cream has been shown not only to treat photoaging, but natural aging as well.

The tests were made on the arms of elderly patients. A lotion containing Vitamin A or retinol was applied to the left arm of each participant, while another lotion not containing retinol was applied to the right arm.

After doing this for a couple of weeks, roughness, wrinkles, and other signs of aging were significantly reduced on the left arm—the arm where the lotion containing retinol was applied. According to the May issue of the journal Archives of Dermatology, tremendous difference between the right arm and the left arm can be seen and felt by the participants. Furthermore, it was reported that retinol promotes the production of collagen. Aside from its anti-aging effects, it also makes the skin withstand injury and the formation of skin ulcerations.

Professor of Dermatology, Sewon Kang stated that with the presence of free radicals in the environment, it is important that science come up with a product that can protect the skin from pollutants that can cause aging. This is not only for vanity, but also to prevent skin cancers and other skin conditions. The study was made to find ways on how to improve the condition of the skin despite natural aging.

Retinoids stimulate the production of collagen and glycosaminoglycans. Glycosaminoglycan is a naturally-occurring substance that increases the retention of water. The skin of people who are well beyond their youth are wrinkled because they are dry. The difference between the skin of a younger person and an older one is that the former's skin is hydrated. The skin of older people is laxer and thinner, thus making it more prone to wrinkles. Moreover, older people feel less thirsty and thus they drink less water. This lack of proper hydration results to dry skin.

Researchers suggest retinol cream or Vitamin A should be made part of every person's nightly regimen. Every person should use the product, not just women. Dr. Kang said retinol cream can be applied to any part of the body you want to improve.
