Former Senator Bob Dole to replace Tony Snow as keynote speaker at True.Celebration

(EMAILWIRE.COM, May 30, 2008 ) GOSHEN Ind. – Though plans continue to move ahead for what is sure to be a successful event, Goshen Health System regrets to announce that due to an illness, former White House Press Secretary Tony Snow cannot attend the Goshen Center for Cancer Care’s fourth annual True.Celebration on June 8.

“We regret to inform our survivors and the public that Tony Snow will no longer be the keynote speaker at True Celebration,” said Dr. Doug Schwartzentruber, medical director of the Goshen Center for Cancer Care. “Though we do not know any of the medical details, our prayers are with Tony.”

“We are, however, pleased to announce that former U.S. Senator Bob Dole has generously agreed to step in and take Tony Snow’s place as our keynote speaker for the event. We are very grateful to Sen. Dole. His willingness to join us in Goshen on such short notice is truly appreciated."

Dole, a prominent political figure, was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1991. Since beating the disease, Sen. Dole has taken a strong leadership role as an advocate for early detection and treatment.

“Sen. Dole is an ideal speaker for our True. Celebration event,” said Joseph Gagliardi, Senior Vice President of the Goshen Center for Cancer Care. “A former U.S. Senator and presidential candidate, Dole is one of the most recognized political figures of our time. We look forward to Sen. Dole sharing his personal story of cancer survivorship with our own survivors.”

Sponsored by the Goshen Center for Cancer Care, True.Celebration is an annual event recognizing those who are courageously facing their fight against cancer. It is about honoring survivors, and thanking them for being examples of hope and courage.

This yearÂ’s celebration begins at 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 8, 2008, at the Sauder Hall Performing Arts Center on the Goshen College campus. The performing arts center is located on College Avenue and 12th Street, Goshen, Ind. The event is free and open to the public. Tickets and reservations are not required.

About former Sen. Bob Dole:
A renowned statesman, Sen. Dole was elected to Congress from his home state of Kansas in 1960 and to the U.S. Senate in 1968. He gained national prominence as Chairman of the Republican National Committee from 1971 to 1972. In 1976, President Gerald Ford tapped him to be his vice presidential running mate. Elected Senate Majority Leader in 1984, Senator Dole set a record as the nationÂ’s longest serving Republican leader. He resigned from the Senate in 1996 to pursue his campaign for President of the United States.

In 2007, Dole served as Co-chair of the PresidentÂ’s Commission on the Care of AmericaÂ’s Returning Wounded Warriors, which offered groundbreaking recommendations on the management of care for our wounded and injured service members.

As Chairman of the National World War II Memorial, Dole led the nation in honoring the heroes of his generation and helped enshrine their legacy of sacrifice for freedom.

Following the attacks of September 11, Dole joined forces with former rival President Bill Clinton to serve as Co-Chair of the Families of Freedom Scholarship Fund, assisting the educational needs of the families of the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and United Flight 93. In 2003, He served as Honorary Co-Chair of the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation, part of President BushÂ’s USA Freedom Corps.

As the Republican Presidential nominee in 1996, Dole offered himself to Americans as an honorable leader. His candidacy for the White House cemented his reputation as an honest, respected statesman who will long be considered one of the most powerful senators and brilliant legislators of our times. In 1997, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom as a tribute to his character and contributions to the nation.

During the Second World War, he was a platoon leader in the legendary Tenth Mountain Division in Italy. In 1945, he was gravely wounded on the battlefield and was twice decorated for heroic achievement. His decorations include two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster. He is married to The Honorable Elizabeth Hanford Dole, current Senator from North Carolina.
