(Medical-NewsWire.com, September 17, 2013 ) Dothan, AL – Millions of people across the United States are affected by disabilities to the point that they can no longer work. Feelings of low self-worth are common when someone beleives that they have been a productive member of society and now are unable to work. Although these feelings are normal, if left unchecked they can drag a person deep into depression. The following are some suggestions that can help to increase a person’s feelings of self-worth.
1. Give the gift of life. Donations of blood, bone marrow and other tissue save millions of lives every year. Giving blood could be one of the easiest ways to make one feel like they are contributing to society. Most cities have frequent blood donation opportunities and it only takes about a half an hour in a reclining position. According to the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center a person can make one blood donation and one platelet donation or six platelet donations in any eight week time period. Donating bone marrow and other tissues can be more difficult and may have more stringent rules but many people with disabilities still qualify.
2. Volunteer in the community. There are many volunteer opportunities that require very little stress or physical exertion but can help an organization or community. Some museums and foundations rely on volunteers to assist guests and help maintain exhibits and buildings. Political parties are always in need of people to work phone banks, stuff envelopes and do simple tasks. Many of these organizations allow volunteers to set their own hours and are willing to work around the complications caused by disabilities.
3. Get out! Staying inside can be extremely detrimental to a person’s psyche. Taking a few minutes to breathe fresh air, look at something different than a wall and listen to sounds other than a TV or radio can be refreshing. Everyone should work out a way to get outside for a few minutes on a regular basis no matter how debilitating their disability may be.
4. Take personal time. Many severely depressed people do not feel like taking care of themselves. If they get out of bed, they may not bathe or practice personal hygiene. Often they do not get dressed, opting to stay in their night clothes. Successfully maintaining good self-worth depends on taking care of oneself. Making a point to get up every day, shower and dress completely including makeup, combing the hair and jewelry can go a long ways to making someone feel better about themselves.
Self-worth is very important to living a happy life despite the circumstances which may happen. Often a person cannot help what happens to them. However, they can determine their personal attitude and how their circumstances will affect their attitude. As Albert Einstein said, “Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving.”
