Probiotics Benefit Those with Irritable Bowel Syndrome

(Medical-NewsWire.com, May 23, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- Stress-associated Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a very real symptom, a new study by the University of Michigan found. But if patients once felt like it was in their head, good news is that probiotics can help alleviate the agitation to the intestinal tract when stressed out.

Stress does not cause chronic Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), but researchers did reveal that it can cause alterations in the brain-gut reflexes, causes IBS symptoms including diarrhea, loss of appetite and inflammation that models true IBS when under a lot of pressure.

Gut microbiota needs a component called inflammasome, that stress can severely suppress. The purpose of inflammasome helps regulate the body’s digestive system, helping the guts bacteria to work properly.

However, over the counter probiotics are able to reverse the inflammasome suppression caused by stress. Lead researcher John Y. Kao, who published the study online in the medical journal Gastroenterology says that the conclusions are important for people with stress-induced IBS. It shows that the slower production of the gut flora is why probiotics make sense to help control the condition.

In an animal study, when mice were stressed out, instead of releasing hormones that help produce the microbiota, they released a hormone that actually reduced the production, causing an observation in inflammation and discomfort during digestion and bowel movements.

While additional studies and trials are needed to figure out the optimal probiotic therapy, Kao says the preliminary study shows that patients can start eating foods high in probiotics such as fruits and vegetables, or talking to their doctor about adding a probiotic supplement into their diet.
