Cosmetic Surgery More Sought After by Those With Mental Illness

(Medical-NewsWire.com, May 12, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- There is a larger percentage of individuals who suffer from psychological problem who undergo cosmetic surgery as compared to the remainder of the population. Those who have suffered domestic abuse are also found to be more likely than others to seek cosmetic surgery as well, according to the research commissioned by the United Kingdom's Department of Health. The work was a systematic review of the cosmetic surgery procedures following the PIP controversy that was seen in 2012.

Researches gathered nearly 200 studies, 13 of which were systematic reviews. The reviewers found that many surgery patients suffered at the hands of abusive partners in relationships, or had some form of relationship hardship. However, the researchers were not able to confirm if the circumstances were directly correlated the effect of seeking surgery.

A larger population of patients who undergo a form of cosmetic surgery also seem to suffer from at least one of a handful of psychological afflictions, such as depression or body dysmorphia, as compared to those who never have undergone a procedure.

Ginny Brunton, who was the head researcher, along with her colleagues, found that the surgery tended to fail in the improvement of the conditions felt. In fact, many individuals found themselves with worse symptoms following the operation. Again, there was no conclusion on whether the cosmetic surgery itself was a cause of the symptoms felt following the procedure.

CBT and therapists are working positive reductions of depression, as well as other mental health issues, as more is being learned about them. They note that working to assist in the lessening of the mental effect, as opposed to physically changing the person, are much more likely to bring forth positive effects.

Brunton noted "Issues must be discussed with patients before they undergo treatments such as face lifts or nose reconstruction. It is crucial that at-risk patients are aware that their mental health may be affected for the worse, rather than the better.

Doctors must be aware of issues underlying requests for cosmetic surgery, who is at risk of poor outcomes, and explore fully with patients the reasons for seeking cosmetic procedures, all potential results, and possible alternative solutions".
