Long Term Care Expert Bill Shorts Offers Help to Keep Longer-Living Citizens from Going Broke

(EMAILWIRE.COM, November 23, 2007 ) Bill Shorts of LTC Financial Partners LLC (with offices in Atascadero, California ) aims to be a financial godsend to thousands of longer-living citizens here. "A big, unrecognized threat is lack of long-term care protection," he says. "When a family member gets injured or ill for a long period, the cost of care can be catastrophic." Shorts says most people wrongly assume that long-term care expenses will be covered by regular health insurance, Medicare, or Medicaid. To alert people to the danger -- and what to do about it -- Shorts announced today a public information campaign. It will include a website that feeds facts to the local media and public; and presentations in area companies, civic groups, religious organizations, and homes. Shorts' Public Information website is available at http://www.ltcfp.us/BillShortsMost California residents don't realize the danger they're in and how to protect themselves, Shorts asserts. "Newspapers, radio, TV, magazines, newsletters, and blogs can help spread the word and really make a difference. We will give them the ammunition."The danger, Shorts explains, stems from a gap in health insurance protection that is made worse by today's increasing life spans. "Regular insurance just doesn't cover the care you need for longer-lasting injuries or illnesses." Long-term care insurance, a relatively new instrument, is designed to pay for nursing home care, assisted living, and home health care, "which can drain your assets if you're not covered," he says. "People need to see how easily they can avert disaster -- just by filling the insurance gap. Why should you lose everything, including your independence, just because you're living longer, which should be a good thing?" Shorts will be offering advice to business owners and managers, too. "There are significant tax advantages if they protect employees and themselves through their organization," he says.In 2005 the federal government and five states launched a "Long-Term Care Consumer Awareness Campaign" to combat the ignorance and encourage initiative in the private sector. "My colleagues and I are taking up the gauntlet," says Shorts. "As the nation's leading network of LTC experts, we think we can really make a difference."Shorts' website offers -- * A growing series of press releases, * Story-angle suggestions (offering provocative topics for reporters and broadcasters, and ideas for program chairs who would like Shorts to speak to their group), * A biography of Shorts,* And other data including breaking information on the Internet.Shorts' organization -- which has a national footprint -- is providing its advisory and brokerage services through a growing number of alliances with major banks, NRL Federal Credit Union, the National Network of Estate Planning Attorneys, and the National Association of Insurance Women. Alliances of many types are in the works. For example, one with a sports franchise will "protect at-risk players and drive home the fact that LTC protection is for all active, vigorous people, as well as aging Americans," he says.Bill Shorts is a California native and has been a California Insurance Agent since graduating from the University of Utah where he majored in Finance and was a conference champion on the swimming team.
